Founders of Nourish, Claire and Gabrielle, are two passionate Lower Hutt locals. Initially starting as “The Hutt Hamper Elves” in 2014, both Claire and Gabe could see how much pressure Christmas time can put on a family when they are trying to make ends meet. What started as a simple idea to help those less fortunate in their community has turned into a large-scale operation, with a huge number of volunteers helping them to make it happen.
Nourish at Christmas is an organisation which provides support and care for local communities through the giving of food to school children and their families across the Hutt Valley and Porirua. It is run entirely by volunteers, with a mission to give every family the food and care needed to live, grow and be healthy.
By working hand in hand with local schools to deliver food hampers, families, in need, Nourish has grown from providing 21 hampers in their first year, through to helping over 550 Wellington families in 2019.
By providing food hampers, Nourish aim to remove some of the pressure associated with the Christmas season, and perhaps help families have a treat on Christmas day, free up some funds for urgent bills or perhaps to provide gifts for the family when they may usually go without. Here at Tommy’s Lower Hutt, we understand the importance of making a difference in our local community and supporting one another has never been more important especially during this unpredictable year.
The Tommy’s Hutt Valley team had a great day helping pack food hampers which were then delivered to schools all around the Hutt Valley and Porirua regions. This year, Nourish achieved an astounding 973 hampers! Double their number from the previous year. This meant that 973 families’ lives were made that little bit easier this Christmas.
