Out of all the seasons, Spring and Summer must be the most popular. This is due in part to the warming weather, offering hope and anticipation for balmy summer evenings after a long dreary winter. My favourite part of the changing of seasons is watching the most beautiful flowers pop up and seeing life returning to the garden.
An obvious indicator that the seasons are changing are when daffodils begin to flower. They are always the first of the Spring blooms to appear and feature heavily due to their popularity, they add a warm and sweet note to the home. As the daffodils fade, Tulips take center stage and bring a bright pop of colour. In the height of Spring, the Wellington Botanical Gardens are famous for their fields of rainbow colours, featuring manicured garden beds with stunning tulips on full display. There are more than 3,000 naturally occurring and genetically cultivated varieties of the tulip worldwide. When a new variety of tulip is created it takes at least 20 years in the stages of cultivation before they eventually find themselves at your local florists. Tulips are an amazing flower to feature in your home as once they cut, they take on a life of their own and continue to grow.
In early October a fan favourite will arrive. Peonies are in season from early October until early January. The coral peony is my personal favourite as it has the sweetest yellow center nestled in amongst the bright pink and blush petals. They always sell quickly in florists, perhaps because of their iconic status as Blair Waldorf’s preferred flower in Gossip Girl. I think it is their short but sweet season and the exclusivity that afford them their status. They are a stunning flower to have in your home as they off a decent amount of vase life. Watch carefully as they shrink back down over night with the cooler weather.
Another visual indicator that warmer months are on their way is the Cherry Blossom. You have likely heard of the Cherry Blossom festival in Japan, Wellington offers its alternative in the foothills of the Rimutaka Ranges at the beautiful Aston Norwood Gardens. They have over 400 Cherry Blossom Trees, if you are driving along state highway 2, you simply can’t miss it!
With the recent COVID19 restrictions, all florists have taken a massive hit. As one of the only producers of perishable goods that are unable to be sold under level 4 restrictions, August saw a huge amount of stunning winter blooms destined for the compost. All florists are back supporting the New Zealand growers that so desperately need our help. Spring and Summer are the perfect seasons to send flowers and with so many unique flowers available I encourage you to support your local florist and see what is on offer.
