Our fourth local hero Sandy, launched a project at Arohata Prison on November 2019, an initiative to empower local wāhine to succeed with dignity by providing them with sanitary items and toiletries. She represents vulnerable women in court, giving them access to expert legal advice as well as giving them hours and hours of free work. Sandy also provides Christmas presents for the children of the prisoners.
Sandy also helps to run an initiative that provides care packages to families in Wellington who lack the simplest of materials needed for managing everyday life. Some of these families are local, some resettling from around the country, and some are refugees who are coming to New Zealand from very little for a better life.
These are just some examples of the amazing work Sandy does in the community. What an incredible woman, a true Wellington hero.
